The images presented were taken in the 1990's. Taken as prints, there is degradation when going from print to digital images.  Also, where we were traveling sometimes delayed processing for weeks or months and humidity played havoc with the undeveloped film. Still, I wanted to share our experiences through the pictures we took.

On to the yucatan peninsula, Mx.

May 1992.  From Belize, we continued to head north to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.  Our destination was Isla Mujeres and would be our last stop before heading to Florida and the U.S.  A part from the wonderful funky, island life that Isla Mujeres offered, it was also a short ferry ride to Cancun and the mainland.  Ultimately, we wanted to travel inland to Chichen Itza, an interesting, beautiful Mayan ruins site.  Once we scoped out how to do that, we got money, showed up at the place in Cancun where we caught the bus to Valladolid, a small town near Chichen Itza, three hours away, and off we went.  For not have a lot of "intell," the trip went smoothly.  We were really impressed with Valladolid and enjoyed spending time around the main square.

Streets of Isla Mujeres. We liked this place. It was touristy in '92, can't imagine what it is like today in 2021. We waited here for good weather to make the crossing to Florida and the U.S.

May 1992.  We were here to see the ruins, so we showed up where we were supposed to in order to catch the bus out to Chichen Itza.  We spent the day wandering, but we couldn't help but compare this site to Teotihuacan, which is in a league of its own.  We still had a wonderful day and an fun three day excursion inland.

Saying Good bye and the blue hole

March 1992.  Marion and I had a great time during their visit.  It did come to an end though.  Their last night in Belize, they got a room at the local hotel so they could repack, get organized, and take a for-real shower.  We ate dinner there too.  Saying goodbye was tough.  We had such a good time and Bijou felt empty for a few days after they left.  Good sports and great fun.  Snorkeling was beautiful on Ranguana Island and the weather was glorious after those first few days of rain.

Blue Hole, Belize. on our "bucket list." It was such a kick to dive it
Picture
April 1992.  Our time in Belize was not over.  We had a few other places we wanted to visit.  We wanted to do some diving and snorkeling before we left.  Ambergris Caye was a place where we bought dives through the local resort on their dive boat.  We also did a lot of snorkeling on our own.  Of course, the big "bucket list" experience came when we sailed to and anchored at the Blue Hole.  This phenomenon is out in the middle of nowhere and although there is a reef around it, we felt very exposed and vulnerable to any weather that might decide to blow through.  We thought when we anchored, we'd be stuck just snorkeling it, but our luck came through and a dive boat anchored there, too.  We jumped in the water ahead of them and did the 130 ft. tank dive while they were around.  This gave us some security for such a deep dive and it also gave us the opportunity to get our tanks filled right there before they took off again.  What luck!!!

On to Belize and a visit from friends

8/3/2021

March, 1992.  Good friends Marion and Keith  decided to brave the wild and join us in Belize.  They were terrific sports and couldn't have asked for better mates to share our tiny boat.  The weather did not cooperate for the first few days and we were stuck in Placentia, doing not much at all, but eventually the sun did come out and it was good after that.

March 1992. Marion and Keith arrived in a small plane that landed in a field. It was the village event--head to the field and watch the plane land.

It rained the first few days of their visit, so we ended up doing domestic things like shopping for groceries and taking a tour up the Monkey River. Marion and Keith booked it and it was a lot of fun. It was four hours and took us up the mangrove swamps.
Picture
Lori looks very bored, but the camera caught her at a bad time. She wasn't bored at all. The Monkey River trip was a lot of fun. Saw iguanas, turtles, kingfishers, yellowtail and heard monkeys, but never saw any. No toucans or parrots either.

Once the sun came out we headed out to the islands.  We chose Ranguana.  It's  quiet, no amenities and so no tourists.    Cruising friends, Roger and Sue on Banjo, came in for one night and we had drinks on Bijou.  On their trip over, they caught a fish they didn't want and so gave it to Keith.  Fisherman came in too and Keith traded some gum and caramels for a fish.  We had enough food now for a couple of meals.

This was the first time that Marion and Keith had taken to the "high seas" in a little boat.  They did comment that they frequently looked to us to see if we were nervous.  We weren't, it was a great sail out to the island.  That's it behind Marion.
