January 1992.  We were so impressed with the market, that we wandered around most of the day.  We also visited Panajachel and Lake Atitlan.  Panajachel is the home of many artisans and we went nuts buying their beadwork.  Lake Atitlan is the  beautiful backdrop for Panajachel and we ferried across to explore the other side in a small village called Santiago Atitlan .  Questionable electricity, no running water and no real support system for visitors.  It was an interesting experience, but we were glad we were there only the one night.  

Antigua was Guatemala's go-to place for learning Spanish and we ran into several cruisers who did what we did in Costa Rica--Spanish immersion classes.  A colonial city (small) and very architecturally interesting, we loved just walking around.  Bought a beautiful jade statue that we still have!

Lake Atitlan and the volcano that backs it. We spent a night in a village across the lake--Santiago Atitlan. Questionable electricity and no water--not even to brush our teeth. Interesting experience though.
