The images presented were taken in the 1990's. Taken as prints, there is degradation when going from print to digital images. Also, where we were traveling sometimes delayed processing for weeks or months and humidity played havoc with the undeveloped film. Still, I wanted to share our experiences through the pictures we took.
We found it to be too cold in San Francisco even in July!! The solution? Escape to the delta. It was warm with fresh water swimming and lots of fun things to do. This was our first real taste of cruising. Summer 1989. As we approached the Golden Gate, we broke out a bottle of champagne to celebrate this momentous occasion. On July 8, 1989, Bijou slipped under the Golden Gate bridge and began her Bay adventure. We were so excited to be sailing in San Francisco Bay, we decided to sail passed the city to get a great look and then come back to the anchorage right in front. That day, we learned a valuable lesson about currents and tidal changes. Find out what direction they flow, how strong they will be and when the tide changes take place. It only took us minutes to sail passed the city, but the rest of the day to get back to where we wanted to anchor. Even with full sails up and engine on, we couldn't make headway against the tidal current. After an extended time trying, we gave up and just anchored until the tide changed in our favor. We finally did it and ended up in a great little anchorage right in front of the city.
Our journey on board Bijou began in March 1989 . Before that, we spent days taking inventory and getting ready for our move aboard in February 1989. At this time our plans were to spend the summer sailing around Southern California, Catalina and the Channel Islands. To have months to enjoy an area we had only been able to spend a few days experiencing seemed so exciting. In March we left our home in Dana Point, CA. and sailed south to Oceanside to get Bijou ready. Once we left Oceanside, we did spend weeks cruising the So. Cal coast, Catalina and The Channel Islands. It was on San Miguel Island in the Channel Islands that we decided to head north to San Francisco. So in late June we did just that and the real journey began. |
